God Knows

How long I stayed in Łomża.

One day,

Without warning

We were loaded into boxcars.

Even the girl with blond braids

Who swore she was not a Jew.

We were told

We were being taken to

A clean camp

With less crowding

And more food.

As the train gained speed

The girl with blond braids

Squeezed herself through

The one high window

And threw herself from

The moving train.

Only God knows now

If she was a Jew

Or not.
