Cutout wax-paper shapes can be placed on a wet wash and left there until the wash dries. The shapes will leave a faint imprint on the wash. This technique works well on regular paper and Yupo paper.
Place cutout wax-paper shapes on a wet watercolor wash.
Later in the painting process, you might consider outlining those shapes with watercolor crayon and painting the inside of each shape white to make them more visible on the finished painting.
Other materials laid down on a wet wash will also leave traces that can make interesting textures. Here a thread is placed on a wet wash on Yupo paper.
Once dried, the thread is removed. It leaves behind an interesting texture.
