WAX RESIST

Wax resist is a technique that can be used on Yupo paper and regular paper. A wax resist will have a more textured look than a masking fluid resist because wax (such as oil pastel) is picked up by the texture on the paper. The edges along a wax resist will also be textured and softer than what you usually get with masking fluid.

It should also be noted that when using masking fluid, you have the option of painting the resulting white areas that have been preserved. That’s not an option when using wax as a resist; the wax will repel paint if you try to paint over it.

In this painting, white oil pastels have been used as one would use masking fluid to preserve highlights in the hair.

Will the Wax Stay on My Paper?

Wax (and anything oil based) will repel paint, so it is an easy way to preserve some lighter (or white) areas from being painted. The main difference between wax and masking fluid is that you can peel off the masking fluid; crayon or oil pastel will remain in your finished painting. This is something to consider if you plan to apply a varnish to your painting. If so, you would need to use a varnish suitable for water-based and oil-based paintings.
