row addition |
Designed, pieced, and quilted by Cheryl Brickey |
Using just five solid fabrics and a “plus” fabric, this baby-size quilt comes together quickly and easily. The design would also look great in large-scale prints instead of solid fabrics.

Block Assembly
Use the same-color pieces within each Plus block.
1. Sew a white 2½˝ square to a color 2˝ × 2½˝ rectangle to make a unit. Repeat to make a total of 2 units.
2. Sew a unit from Step 1 between 2 color 4˝ squares. Repeat with the second unit.
3. Sew a white 2½˝ × 6½˝ rectangle between 2 color 2˝ × 2½˝ rectangles.
4. Sew the rows together to make 1 Plus block. The block should measure 9½˝ × 9½˝. Repeat to make a total of 5 Plus blocks.

Quilt Top Assembly
1. Sew together the following pieces and a Plus block of the same color according to the row assembly diagram. The row should measure 9½˝ × 40½˝.
1 rectangle 9½˝ × 24˝
1 Plus block
1 rectangle 9½˝ × 8˝
Repeat to make a total of 5 rows.
Row assembly
2. Arrange the rows according to the quilt top assembly diagram.
Quilt top assembly
3. Sew the rows together to make the quilt top, which should measure 40½˝ × 45½˝.
Finishing
Refer to Finishing Your Quilt as needed.
1. To make the quilt back, cut the backing fabric into 2 pieces each 49˝ × WOF, trim off the selvage edges, and sew the pieces together along the trimmed selvage edges. Trim to approximately 49˝ × 54˝.
2. Layer the quilt top, batting, and backing. Baste and quilt as desired. Bind and enjoy! This version of Row Addition was quilted in an overlapping wave pattern in the rows and a dense back-and-forth design in the plus signs.
