† Because everyone’s abuse history is different, it is difficult to suggest specific resources for “nonabusive” erotica. Some female clients have told me they found certain romance novels to be helpful for sexual healing. They specifically appreciated books that described strong characters who overcame difficult pasts and learned to open themselves to robust sexual pleasure with a loving partner. Books by authors such as Lisa Kleypas, Judith Ivory, Loretta Chase, Julie Anne Long, and Susan Elizabeth Phillips are generally noted for portraying sex as consensual, mutually pleasurable, safe, and intensely rewarding. Some male and female survivors have also found it helpful to explore materials on sensual massage and tantric sex practices, as well as read sexual love poems from anthologies, such as Passionate Hearts and Intimate Kisses (see the Resources section). I suggest you have a nonsurvivor friend or support person screen materials to provide you with recommendations that fit your particular interests and needs.
