1 Sunni and Shia are the two main denominations of Islam, after a schism that occurred shortly after the death of the Prophet Muhammad. The Barelwi movement originated in Bareilly in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, is based on the Sunni Hanafi school of jurisprudence and has around 200 million followers in South Asia. Sufism refers to a set of religious orders who emphasize the mystical aspect of Islam. Tablighi Jamaat is an Islamic revivalist movement that preaches a return to primary Sunni Islam, particularly in matters of ritual, dress and personal behaviour, and is part of the wider Deobandi movement, which was founded in India in 1867 in part as a reaction to British colonialism. Wahhabism is another highly conservative branch of Sunni Islam and is the dominant form of Islam in Saudi Arabia.
