Citrus, orange, herbaceous
Thanks to flavors of orange and thyme, the foods of Provence are a natural pairing for this drink—from braised endives to grilled sardines.
New York’s Stork Club was one of the most splendid clubs of the age, a place where the Kennedys and Vanderbilts dined, and celebrities frequented the dance floor. Table Fifty, right near the door, was a favorite spot for Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio. The club’s signature drink is credited to head bartender Eddie Whittmer. The original recipe is published in Lucius Beebe’s The Stork Club Bar Book (1946). This is a slightly boozier version that isn’t too sweet.
2 ounces (60 ml) Old Tom gin (Hayman’s)
¼ ounce (7 ml) Cointreau
½ ounce (15 ml) orange juice
¼ ounce (7 ml) fresh lime juice
Dash of Angostura bitters
Orange twist, for garnish
Shake ingredients with ice and strain into a chilled coupe. To garnish, rest an orange twist on the rim of the glass.
