DOCTOR COCKTAIL

Caramel, clove, lime

Smoked meats, lamb burgers, or squash lasagna all pair well with this aromatic drink.

The Doctor may be the ultimate fireside sipper, especially near an outdoor bonfire. The original recipe appeared in a very simplified form back in 1919 as a two-ingredient drink containing Swedish Punsch (see note on page 98) and lime juice, and underwent several iterations by the end of Prohibition. If you’ve never explored Swedish Punsch, consider this your conversion experience. Rum drinkers, this is a deep Dark ’n’ Stormy (page 194), punched up with lime and dialed down with bitters so that it’s far from cloying. Layered and luscious.

1½ ounces (45 ml) Kronan Swedish Punsch

¾ ounce (22 ml) dark Jamaican rum (Appleton Estate V/X)

¾ ounce (22 ml) fresh lime juice

    3 dashes Angostura bitters

    Lime wheel, for garnish

Shake ingredients with ice and strain into a rocks glass with a large ice cube. Garnish with a lime wheel on the edge of the glass.
