COLD-WEATHER WARMERS

Hot drinks are coziness in a glass. Whether it’s a foggy morning or frosty evening, they restore and rejuvenate. There’s something about steam coming off the top of a mug that leads to contemplation and conviviality.

In this chapter, you’ll find drinks involving fire, spice, and even baked apples slipped into the bottom of mugs. Pair these with pie, a plate of cookies, doughnuts, or a homemade crisp. The Smoking Bishop (page 221) is easy to prepare for a party and will fill your house with the aroma of toasted orange and spice. A Tom and Jerry (page 219) is also delightful for gatherings—a boozy whipped creamlike drink that’s worth the effort. Hot Vietnamese Coffee (page 218) is a delightful twist on after-dinner coffee.

Consider serving these warmers in place of dessert or as an excuse to climb up onto the roof with a thermos and a blanket to stargaze.
