Herbaceous, berry, citrus
Serve before dinner in the garden at the height of berry season. It pairs well with funky cheeses, pork chops, or roasted chicken.
Featuring blackberries and juniper syrup, this adaptation of Aida Mollenkamp’s garden-y sipper riffs off a modern classic, the Bramble (page 178). At a party, try offering both the gin-based Bramble and this nonalcoholic version. It’s especially lovely served over crushed ice with its garnish of extra herbs and blackberries. We like to set out a mason jar full of herbs and let partygoers choose from a variety.
3 teaspoons juniper syrup (page 243)
½ ounce (15 ml) fresh lemon juice
6 blackberries
Sprig of tarragon, rosemary, or mint, for muddling
3 ounces (90 ml) soda water
In a rocks glass or highball, stir together juniper syrup and lemon juice. Add the blackberries and a sprig of herbs, then gently muddle. Add ice and top off with soda. Serve with a straw.
