Invest in yourself

God regularly sends us divine opportunities for investment in ourselves. Be on the lookout for them. He does this first through His Word, which is the best investment we can put into ourselves. But He also sends many other “investment opportunities” to us. In my own life, I’ve incorporated many of these. For example, my wife and I have a weekly date night that has been a great investment in our marriage. Also, every Saturday when the kids were little we would “sneak out” on Mom to have an early breakfast together. This time was great for the kids and me, while allowing my wife a nice quiet break.

Everything you say or do creates an investment somewhere. Whether that investment generates a dividend or a loss depends on you. Always do your best, for what you plant now you will harvest later.

One of the biggest mistakes you can make is to believe you work for someone else. No matter how many bosses you appear to have, you really work for the Lord. You can’t look to others as your source. That’s why tapping into God’s investment opportunities is so important. They are His way of developing and instructing us. When an archer misses the mark, he turns and looks for the fault within himself. Failure to hit the bull’s-eye is never the fault of the target. “To improve your aim—improve yourself” (Gilbert Arland).

When prosperity comes, don’t spend it all; give some back to others and make an investment in yourself. Half of knowing what you want is knowing what you must give up before you get it. Time invested in improving ourselves cuts down on time wasted in disapproving others.

“Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed” (2 Tim. 2:15). Investment doesn’t cost, it pays. You cannot fulfill your destiny without applying the principle of investing in yourself.

Seize the opportunities God sends to invest in yourself.
