As Loraine Hutchins notes in “Love That Kink” (see Bi Any Other Name, Alyson Publications, 1991), “kinky” may be a synonym for “sexually deviant or Other” because such sexual behavior has traditionally been attributed to ethnic minorities, particularly blacks. I use the word mindfully, both to conjure up the labeling process oppressed, non-normative people undergo, and to emphasize that we bisexuals have undergone naming from without and in some cases impose naming on others.

Alfred C. Kinsey’s groundbreaking mid-century research uncovered the incidence of homosexual and heterosexual behavior in American society; see Sexual Behavior in the Human Male and Sexual Behavior in the Human Female. Kinsey intended his scale to describe behavior, not identity, so when I say that someone decides on a Kinsey rating I am departing greatly from the way Kinsey thought of sexual orientation.
