WHY DO WE GIVE DOG TREATS?

When it came to writing this book the most important message I wanted to convey was why we give treats to dogs, and how treats form an integral part of the bond between owner and dog. Let’s take a closer look at just why we give our dogs treats.

Treats for Training

It’s widely recognized that using treats in positive reinforcement training is the kindest and most effective form of training for dogs around the world. When presented with a treat, a dog’s attention will become instantly sharper and focused—making results happen swiftly.

Treats for Distraction

Whether it’s a piece of jerky to chew, or a treat ball filled with goodies, treats are a great way to distract your dog in a positive way. For dogs that are left alone, or suffer from separation anxiety, treats are a great way to keep them distracted while you’re gone. Or maybe you’re at home and just need your dog’s attention diverted while you finish an important task. Regardless, it’s treats for the win, every time.

Treats for Bonding

While it may not be as practical as training treats, or as useful as distraction treats, giving your dog a treat “just because” it a totally valid reason in it’s own right. Treating your dog with the odd dog biscuit is a great way to strengthen the bond between the two of you. Your dog associates the reward with the person dispensing the treat, building trust and affection. It’s also a great way for new faces in a household to earn a dog’s loyalty! Never underestimate the power of the humble dog treat.

Treats for Celebrating

Last but certainly not least, we love to pamper our dogs with treats when we’re celebrating. Maybe it’s a tenth birthday, a happy Gotcha Day, or we want to tell our dog how much we love them on Valentine’s Day. Whatever the cause for celebration, treats are a great way to show your dog they’re an important part of the family.
