Coesen: In the Ilterian language, the word Coesen means the combination of two or more items, particles, or organisms. The Four Originals adopted the term for their classification that defines them as a race of human-hybrids who originated from a single tribe on the continent of Africa. Most are born with birthmarks behind their left ear. Each tribe has a variation of this mark that they are born with. Some Coesen are born with an ability. It is present at birth but doesn’t manifest until the age of puberty. Most are born with a single ability. A very small percentage are born with two.
Breed: The child of a Coesen and Middling coupling. Most of these children do not carry the birthmark of a full blooded Coesen. The law on the books state that Coesen parent and Breed are to be sentenced to death, the human parent’s mind is wiped cleaned. 98% of Breed children are born with no abilities but may still carry the birthmark. If they mate a Coesen, their children may or may not have abilities.
Child of Jai or Pet: Jai of the Arkean tribe conceived a Breed with a man named Shaw. Even after her descendants couple with only Coesens, each are born with the physical features of a Caucasian.
Middling: Term to define a human with no Coesen blood.
Protectors: A Coesen who is chosen by the Source and is infused with power during the transition stage to keep the Coesen’s Ward safe. They sense when their ward is in danger and is able to locate them at all times. These Coesen are stronger and faster than any living entity on earth with exception of one person, Caleb Scott. In history only two Middlings have been chosen by the Source. It is believed that Middling aren’t capable of surviving the transformation.
Transition: A Coesen abilities become active when they go through puberty. This process is called a Transition.
Transference: When a Coesen is chosen by the Source to be awarded the abilities to become a Protector.
The Halo: A Coesen whose prophecy states will bear a full halo birthmark and have all the abilities known to Coesen.
The Source: What the Coesen refer to the original source of power, Lette.
Royals: The bloodlines closely related to the Original Four. Only four generations are referred to as Royals.
Bodai: The Bodai were the original name and leaders of the nation that eventually become known as the Coesen.
Bresi: The Bresi was formed from the original Bodai who decided to opt out of the change when offered power by the Original Four. They isolated themselves for a very long time. Eventually they discover Pythos. They pray to his cocooned form as a deity.
Four Tribes: Arkean, Bode, Gedgi, Quende
CPA: Coesen Protection Agency, the overseeing security and policing branch for Coesen.
Tandot: A competition of strength, intelligence, and endurance, to win the right to mate a Royal. Only those who are considered perfect Coesen specimens are allowed to enter.
Old Age: The time of the gilded age when Coesen were obsessed with wealth, class, and breed. The rich were set apart as elites. Lineage and wealth dictated your place in society. It wasn’t until compassion became fashionable that a new way of thinking was adopted and practiced by the Sovereign and most Coesen. Though, with change there is always the few who hold onto the ways of old.
Pula: Curse word, or derogatory name
Maatii: Three round challenge to become a Royal Guard. You cannot die in the dream-like state but you feel all the pain inflicted on you. The challenge is timed.
The Village: The object is to fight your way through a village full of super beings that do not eat, sleep, or feel pain, in order to reach a pearl like sphere that each member needs to touch at the same time.
The Vortex: The object is for each member to cross a wet, slippery metallic pole over a swirling vortex to reach the pearl like sphere that is floating in the center without falling.
The Pride: The object is to get pass the pride of gigantic lions and lioness to reach the pearl-like orb which is guarded by an even bigger, White Lion.
If you should fail these tasks, you must reapply and do trials over...or settle to be a Sentry Guard
Cycling: The process in with a Coesen has been transferred to. These Coesen endures a physical change over a three-day period.
Rotation: Every Protector must enlist in the Coesen Guard for a time period of the service. They can choose the branch. The three branches are, the Royal (highest), the Sentry (detective Branch), or Guard (police branch)
Augur: A Coesen who can see the prophecies.
Fasen: Burial ceremony. The body is washed and cleaned by someone close to the deceased. Close family is in attendance when the body is burned. A viewing is held after the body is returned to ashes to show and offer respect to the surviving family.
Soahn: Term for Royal
Potentate: Sovereign’s Mate, King.
Rootstone: The power unit of all Keystones.
Keystone: An object that denies or allows access to a protected area.
Veilex: A stone that will react to an enemy of the wearer.
Dregan: Coesen who for whatever reason do not agree with Coesen law. Although they consider themselves separate they follow the most important rules which is why they are permitted to live in peace. The name was taken from a Coesen who broke the law a long time ago.
Sodregs: Dregans who care nothing for the laws and break them without care. They are hunted and tried by the Guard.
Dardregs: Dregans who practice the Dark Arts. They follow no law and most are minions of Dregan, a Coesen Protector from long ago who fell in love with his ward. He eventually killed several Coesen.
Meriotia: Bonding or marriage ceremony that lasts three days.
The first is a celebration or Gathering.
The second day is the Mating and Blooding ritual/wedding.
The third day is the Showering in which gifts and well wishes are given.
Ilterian: The race of Lette’s people that hail from a planet far from earth.
Ika: A medicine man or woman of the village.
Oracle: The seer or witch that foresees the future.
Jzerect: Black magic, forbidden.
CARD: Stands for Coesen Ability Registration Department, a specialized section of the Royal Guards. Coesen are required to register all abilities to this agency. Information is kept private unless legal, safety, medical, or employment requires to know the information.
Utopian Circus: A circus run by Coesen with Coesen performers.
Inhibitor Chip: A piece of tech that prevents the wearer from using their abilities.
Purist: Coesen who believe the Breed are an abomination.
Kytel: Group who are against Breed and prefer pure bloodlines.
Veris: The only way the Council of Four can meet face to face without fear of being exterminated in one swift move. In a sleep like state, very similar to the Maatii, each of the Four are ushered to a common room in an astral plane by the head of the Four. While in this mental state their physical bodies are vulnerable so they are housed in a secured room watched over by their Protector.
Hasa: A Coesen title of respect, used for someone who is a paternal protector, or progenitor.
Royal Guard: The justice branch concerning royals. They also handle treats, security, and keep the peace. The Sentry Guards report to them and they report to the Council of Four. They wear a brand, centered on the back of their right hand. A black circle surrounded by the beautifully scripted names of each tribe. A set of knives crossed at their hilts, starting at the wrist, while the blades encircled the script. The tips of the blades ended at the base of their middle finger.
Sentry Guard: The detective and policing branch of the Coesen. They investigate cases for their sector and manage the Coesen Guard. They report to the Royal Guards.
Coesen Guard: Policing branch of the Coesen who handle local cases. They report to the Sentry Guards.
Fading: The stage of becoming invisible before teleporting. The fade can be held as long as the necessary before actually teleporting.
Fader: Someone who can camouflage themselves into the objects around them to become invisible.
The Veris: The act of bringing the Four together on another plane of existence to meet and discuss business.
Monad: A single unit or entity. What the Coesen call the being inside Caleb.
