THE LAB

THE NILE EGYPTIAN MUSEUM, FREMONT, CA

“KAILI JONES HAS ARRIVED” Carla said jokingly as Kaili entered the lab.

Carla was a full-figured woman who had worked for the museum for forever.  People often teased her about becoming one of the exhibits soon.  No one ever doubted her work value. If you wanted something done with speed and accuracy you give it to Carla.

Carla loved the nickname she gave Kaili as a reference to Indiana Jones due to Kaili’s love of exploring and her passion for research of Egyptian artifacts. All the joking was taken in stride.

Even though Jim was across the room working, he parroted the call-out “Kaili Jones is in the building.”

Kaili always felt welcomed in the lab.  She respected the work they did here. Many of her puzzles were solved with Carla and Jim assisting.  Today was no exception.

Lifting up the manilla envelope, Kaili handed to Carla. “If you could be so kind as to rush the DNA on this one, it would be greatly appreciated.” Carla nodded in acceptance. But before Carla could ask the next question Kaili continued. “It is from a molar. All powder. Literally hot off the presses. I realize you can only rush so much and have to place the powder into 56 degrees Celsius for 12 hours. Only asking if you can make it a priority.”

“You know I will do anything for a nice San Antonio Sweet Red Wine.”

“You’re on... Thanks.” With that Karli left the lab but before going out the door she let herself enjoy one little jab, “Night Jim-boy.” And she went right out the door before Jim could respond.

Kaili was feeling as light as air with each step.  She could have her answers in the next couple of days. Things all seem to be lining up. Almost lining up too well.
