In 1964, when Lyndon Johnson decided to run for president without Bobby Kennedy as his vice president, Bobby, at a loose end, decided to leave Massachusetts and run for the Senate in New York state against the incumbent Republican, Kenneth Keating. I liked Keating and so, with journalist Lisa Howard, we formed the Democrats for Keating committee. One million seven hundred thousand Democrats voted against Bobby, and he would have been defeated had Johnson not swept the nation and, in the process, elected Bobby.
