Chapter Sixty-Two
“That was great,” said Rory.
It was midnight, and Thyra strolled by his side in the fresh night air. They were on their way to their quarters, Jericho following behind at a discreet distance. She couldn’t remember the last time she’d been this happy.
“I was good, wasn’t I?” she mused, her gaze on the clear sky where hundreds of stars glittered. “They sure liked that last song. I thought they were gonna hit the roof.” A door slammed nearby, and she looked that way as she said, “I really enjoyed myself. I sure miss the entertainment business.”
And she did. She had always loved floating away on one song or another, lost in the moment, forgetting her worries. A pity she’d had to give it up.
“You were a lounge singer, right?” Rory asked, reminding her of that time long ago.
“For a while, yes.” She had explored the career to gain favor with Louis Abajian. The infamous weapons dealer had had a soft spot for sexy lounge singers. She’d used that weakness well. “The hours were appalling, but I loved it.”
She rubbed her arms against the cold, berating herself for not bringing her new Pashmina.
“You are really good. Chilly?” Rory asked, putting an arm around her shoulders for warmth. She was sure he would have offered his jacket if he’d been wearing one. He was such a sweet boy. All chivalrous and darling. Not to mention gorgeous.
“I know, sugah. But thank you. I love compliments.” She winked at him, getting her reward in his soft laugh.
Would she have any luck seducing him tonight? She hoped so.
They reached their destination, and he opened the door for her. “You go on in. I need to have a quick word with Jericho.”
“Sure.” She rose on the tips of her toes and pressed a quick kiss to his lips. “See you in a minute.”
The man was so damn stubborn. She just didn’t understand his resistance to having a good time with her. Most men would jump at the chance.
But not Rory O’Donnell. Oh, no. He was too busy being honorable.
She huffed out a breath. Such a pity that this seduction game would end as soon as he learned of their deception.
Because it would all end when he found out what they’d done. That they were using him as bait. He wouldn’t appreciate that, even if it was to defeat their mutual enemy.
Such a pity. She really was starting to like the man. Genuinely like him.
