ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Brenda Hillman won two awards for her first book of poetry, White Dress, a Wesleyan New Poets book published in 1985, the Delmore Schwartz Memorial Award from New York University and the Norma Farber First Book Award from the Poetry Society of America. She received an NEA fellowship to work on Fortress, her second book (1989), and received a Silver Medal from the Commonwealth Club for it. Her third book, Death Tractates, was published in 1992. She teaches writing at St. Mary’s College, Moraga, California, and lives in Kensington, on a hill overlooking Berkeley. Hillman is a graduate of Pomona College (B.A. 1973) and of the University of Iowa (M.F.A. 1976).
