SIXTEEN

When Daniel had made it back to his room, he closed the door and fell on his bed, rejuvenated over finally learning who he was and what he was meant to be. There were no more secrets, no more lies as to what his identity would look like, could look like. He, out of all the young men, would be the one to bring down Mortezan. Now he felt like he had to learn more about his enemy and his tactics before anything else. Where he would get that information he didn’t know, but he was determined to find out quickly.

“You seem happy,” came a familiar voice to the right of him.

Sporting a big grin on his face, he sat up and said, “I think you need to find a better hiding place, My Lady.”

Princess Anya came out of her familiar hiding spot and said, “You need to be more careful.”

Daniel eyed the Princess suspiciously. “Why do you say that?”

The Princess looked on both sides to make sure nobody was coming. “Can I be honest with you and this stays between us?”

Daniel’s heart stopped for a brisk moment, forcing him to catch his breath. After a brief moment, he said, “Whatever is spoken, I won’t utter a word, My Lady.”

Anya came closer, Daniel got to his feet because he felt he was being rude sitting down. “I feel like I’ve known you all my life. There’s just something about you that pulls me toward you, and I can’t explain it. Whatever the reason is, I don’t plan on you straying too far away from me.”

Daniel’s heart skipped a beat over what she had just said. She what? I mean, she’s been close to me since I’ve been here, but I guess I haven’t been paying attention. He cleared his throat as he replied, “You barely know me though, Your Grace.” Not that I’m complaining, I love it. He instantly thought of Mary, making him block out any sort of romance towards the princess; which in turn made him clam up again.

In reply, she leaned into his ear and whispered, “I know.”

Daniel walked the princess to the door, opening and standing to the side, doing his best to not make eye contact with her. He did not know how to go about with this situation; the last thing he needed was to get in trouble with the King for fraternizing with his daughter. Deep down, he wanted to say something that he was interested too, but for the time being, he could not find the words. The past was still too much of a burden for him to think of anyone else to love at the moment regardless of the fact of how he felt. As the Princess walked slowly past him, he whispered, “Good night My Lady.”
