Hot Saucy Joes

Thrill your family’s taste buds with this spicy version of the classic sloppy Joe. Temper the heat (if you must!) with a sprinkle of Cheddar cheese on each sandwich.

Makes 8 servings

1 tablespoon olive oil

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 large onion, diced

1 teaspoon ground ancho chile

1/2 teaspoon red chile flakes

freshly ground black pepper to taste

sea salt to taste

1/2 cup diced carrot

1/3 pound lean ground beef

1/3 pound ground pork

1/3 pound ground veal

3/4 cup tomato paste

1/2 cup Frank’s® RedHot® Original Cayenne Pepper Sauce

1 cup apple hard cider

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1 tablespoon firmly packed light brown sugar

FOR SERVING

8 hamburger or sandwich buns

1     Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the garlic, onion, spices, and carrot and cook, stirring occasionally with a spatula, until fragrant, about 5 minutes. Add meat and sauté until brown, about 5–10 minutes, stirring to break up the meat into small pieces. Add the remaining ingredients. Simmer, uncovered, about 20 minutes, or until the meat is tender and most of the liquid has evaporated.

2     Serve immediately on buns.
