Chapter Thirty-One

EUPHORIA ENVELOPED Kade as he teleported away from the insane asylum in the Night Cursed District. His plan had worked and he was now a member of a new trinity. He’d become linked to the master vampire and the demon lord. Both were small presences in the back of his mind. Over time, he would get used to the sensation. For now, it felt like an itch that he couldn’t quite scratch.

The warlock had been so focused on getting justice for his mother that he hadn’t thought through the consequences of linking himself to two evil creatures. He’d caught glimpses into the minds of his allies when he’d become bonded to them. Sebastian had a burning desire for revenge against Lord Kreaton. Raum wanted power and figured this was his best chance of getting it.

While the master vampire was powered by necromantic magic, he wasn’t as malevolent as Kade had expected. A strong sense of nobility still remained inside him. Raum was a different story. All demons were evil, but he was their ruler, so he had to be ruthless and merciless. Kade was glad their shared power made them equals. If Raum had been in charge of their triad and they managed to overthrow the Immortal Triumvirate, Nox would no doubt have suffered untold misery.

“Sebastian and I will have to keep the demon in check,” he murmured, then took in his surroundings. He’d teleported to his conjuring den, but it was far larger than it should have been. He turned in a circle to take in the extra furniture, shelves and ingredients that had appeared. “What the hell?” he said in confusion. Nothing in the room looked familiar.

Leaving the den, he found himself in a strange hallway that led to a staircase to the left. More rooms were to the right. Most were bedrooms with attached bathrooms. He found the master bedroom at the back of the house. It had a gigantic bed with a gold bedspread and matching pillows. The closet was full of his clothes, which confused him even more. His bathroom was spacious, modern and was decorated in white and gold tones.

Kade headed downstairs to find more bedrooms on the second floor, as well as sitting rooms. On the first floor was a library, more sitting rooms, a huge living area, a big dining room and a large kitchen. His furniture was new and looked expensive. Apparently, forming a triumvirate had increased his standing in Nox considerably. Fear shot through him that his enemies would hear about the transformation of his house. He looked out through a window to see woods rather than other houses.

The warlock loped over to the grand foyer and opened the door. His new home was a mansion and it was on the edges of the fairy suburbs of the Fae District. The three-story stone building was secluded enough that his neighbors wouldn’t see him from the street. The same image of a cloaked man was on the door, but he was amazed to see a faint outline of a crown on the figure’s head. It was a sure sign that he and his allies were on the right path.

Still feeling energized from the influx of power, Kade returned inside and strode into the living room. He sat down on one of the plush dark brown couches and a glass of wine appeared on the heavy, masculine looking coffee table. He took a sip and found it was far better quality than he was used to. Being half human meant he could drink alcohol without it affecting him badly.

His thoughts turned dark when he thought about his mother. He conjured up her image of when she’d been a little girl that he’d gotten from the elemental creature that seemed to be Xiara Evora’s pet. Inilvian had been beautiful, with long blonde hair and delicate features. Her eyes were the exact same shade of amethyst as his own. She hadn’t deserved to be imprisoned and forced to breed babies for the evil overlords who ran the city. God only knew how many more children like him were out there.

“I have to put a stop to this,” Kade said as he stared into his glass. “I can’t allow the Immortal Triumvirate to continue their sick, evil deeds.”

He now had the power to do something about it, or he soon would. All he had to do was find a woman who would complement his power. The trouble with that was everyone thought he was just a low-level lackey of the Magic Guild. He couldn’t let his fellow guildmembers know about his alliance. He would have to find a woman who held no allegiance to the guild and convince her to bind her soul with his.

“I’m sure it’ll be a piece of cake,” he said wryly, since all magic users were expected to become members of the guild. His social skills were sorely lacking after spending his entire life being ostracized. He had no trouble bedding willing women when he felt the need for companionship. Human witches were fascinated with fae men and found his looks impossible to resist. The problem was that he had no idea how to convince a female to join his cause. He toyed with the idea of asking Raum for his advice, then discarded it. If he had to seek out a demon for dating tips, then he was doomed to failure. He had to find a suitable candidate on his own, using his wits and any other methods of persuasion that he could employ.

Kade had one year to find his mate, for want of a better word. While next Halloween seemed like a long way off, the time would no doubt fly. He had a feeling it wasn’t going to be easy to find his match and to woo her. Who would want to become tied to a half breed like him?
