Casey rolled his eyes at the sight of his dad’s attempt not to draw too much attention to his entrance with a girl about Casey’s age and a young boy as they slipped into the back of his class in the surprisingly large conference room in the library.
Smugly, he realized that he was right in thinking his dad had found a stray or in this case two. The boy’s eyes were on Casey as he taught with a bright hopeful look while the young woman’s were nervous and kept darting to watch the boy.
Forty minutes later, he wrapped up the class with a final sign and word toward the two handfuls or so of students, waiting until it was only his dad, the two who were clearly siblings, and himself in the room. He cocked his head, signing, “Strays, huh?”
“People, not strays, Case, my boy! I raised you better than that.” His dad grinned bouncing on his heels.
Relaxing at the signs, Casey looked at the boy who was watching him with happy awe, “Nice to meet you both. What can I do for you?” He spoke and gestured swiftly.
Nodding his head toward Jazzy, his dad continued in sign without a verbal response. Which was a surprise as they normally only signed in public when Casey needed help understanding a conversation that was carried on too quickly or only between themselves. “This is Jeff and his sister Jazzy who just got custody of him. She needs to learn sign language since he’s lost his hearing.”
“Well, they’ve come to the right place!” He grinned at the exuberant smile and nod from Jeff. “Jeff, you already know how to sign well? We’ll see what we need to do for you and your sister. Get you both signing well in no time at all.”
“Some. I’ve learned for two years.” The boy bit his lip, looking at his sister quickly.
Jazzy rubbed her brother’s shoulder. “That's when the accident happened with our parents and I’ve only gotten to reunite with Jeff now.” She said. “Jeffy, why don’t you go find some books? Okay?”
