TONERS AND ASTRINGENTS

Once your face has been thoroughly cleansed and before you apply a moisturizer, you will want to use a toner to lock in moisture and shrink the pores. Even dry skin can benefit from a gentle toner every few days.

Toners, also called astringents, can not only cleanse and reduce the size of pores, prevent breakouts, and regulate sebum production, they also balance the skin’s pH and help it heal.

The easiest way to apply liquid toner is with a cotton ball or makeup square; that way it won’t end up running down your forehead into your eyes. Or place the toner in a spray bottle and give your face a gentle spritz. Keep toners in the refrigerator for an extra-refreshing experience.

Top Tea Toner: This beneficial recipe offers antioxidant, astringent, antibacterial, and antiviral properties. Combine 3/4 cup brewed green tea (made with 3 tea bags) and 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar. Pour into a jar or bottle, add 5 drops tea tree essential oil (or any preferred oil), and shake well. This keeps for a week in the refrigerator. Avoid eyes when applying.

Hydrating Herbal Toner: Begin with 3 tablespoons rose water, 2 tablespoons witch hazel, 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar, 8 drops rose hip oil, 4 drops tea tree oil, and 5 drops lavender or other herbal essential oil. Place the ingredients in a small bowl and whisk them together. Pour into a glass spray bottle. To use, close your eyes and spray your face, lightly massaging the toner into the skin. Follow with a moisturizer. It can also be used to refresh skin before bedtime.

Honey Pore Cleanser: Honey contains enzymes that are able to clarify the skin and clear the pores, leaving skin with a more even tone. Combine 2 tablespoons coconut oil with 1 tablespoon honey and apply the mixture to clean, dry skin (avoiding the eyes). Then rinse.

Vinegar Toner: Using vinegar to tighten pores supposedly goes back to Helen of Troy. Mix 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar with 2 cups of cool water and use as an astringent finisher to clean and tighten your skin and restore your acid mantle.
