The Right Fabric

image

Traditionally, people use Sashiko on dye-fabrics, particularly indigo dye. But that is not a rule set in stone. Any color of fabric will do, provided that the fabric is smooth and even.

PRO TIP: when choosing the size of the fabric, make sure that it not only covers the gap or hole you are about to mend, but extends beyond the hole’s borders to cover a large area. In other words, choose a fabric that is almost the same size as the hole. However, in many cases, people have been known to use the exact measurements as the gap that they would like to stitch. This has its own advantages that we shall discuss further below. As you are getting started, we are going to give you enough surface area to work with.

For example, if the hole you are mending is 3 inches by 2 inches, then you should ideally choose a fabric that is 5 inches by 5 inches.

This allows you to have an extra area around the hole to extend your pattern. The amount of area you would like to work with depends on your preference. You can use a bigger fabric so that you can add a bigger pattern to your denim.
