Seven-Grain Bread

Flavorful and stuffed with grains, this lovely loaf is the best thing I’ve ever made in my bread machine.

PREP: 10 MIN. BAKE: 3 HOURS MAKES: 1 LOAF (16 SLICES)

2/3 cups water (70° to 80°)

3 tablespoons nonfat dry milk powder

2 tablespoons shortening

2 tablespoons honey

2 teaspoons salt

1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1 cup whole wheat flour

3/4 cup five-grain cereal

1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast

In bread machine pan, place all ingredients in order suggested by manufacturer. Select basic bread setting. Choose crust color and loaf size if available. Bake according to bread machine directions (check dough after 5 minutes of mixing; add 1 to 2 tablespoons of water or flour if needed).

NOTE This recipe was tested with Red Mill brand five-grain cereal. You may substitute Oatmeal Crisp Raisin Cereal. Remove raisins and crush enough cereal to measure 3/4 cup.
