Mom K. went to push open the glass door to the Hair Today Styling Salon . . . and almost bounced her head off the glass.

The door was locked.

The door was never locked in the middle of the day.

Either Carol or Chrissy was always at her station.

Mom K. put her hand against the glass and looked in.

The room was completely empty, except for a single push broom over in one corner. No chairs. No sinks. No dryers. No mirrors. No tables. No magazines.

No Carol.

No Chrissy.

Mom K. stepped back from the door to double-check and be sure she was at the right address.

No sign.

You could just barely see a faint outline of where the letters HAIR TODAY had been on the building.

“Not good,” said Mom K.

“So not good,” said Dad K.

And in the next second they had the exact same thought.

They flagged down a cab.

Dad K. said, “Sunny Sun Sunshine Day Care!”

Mom K. added, “As fast as you can.”
