These fruits are rich in vitamin C, a vital nutrient for keeping the immune system in tip-top shape. Several immune cells need vitamin C to perform their tasks, including T-cells and phagocytes (such as macrophages). Vitamin C also aids the absorption of iron, a nutrient needed for immunity and wound healing.

Foods to avoid

High-fat and high-sugar foods – Being overweight or obese can inhibit immunity. A higher body mass index has been linked to an increased susceptibility to infection. One study found obesity associated with a higher risk of skin infections, cystitis, and respiratory infections. Obese people were also much more likely to receive hospital treatment for an infection.
