WHAT’S THAT CRACKING SOUND:

VOCAL CHANGES

images

When you are between 12 and 14 years old, your voice will start to get deeper. The deepening of your voice happens because of (bet you guessed this by now) the effect of testosterone. This time the testosterone is working on your larynx (also known as your voice box). The larynx then gets bigger and your vocal cords get longer and thicker.

For some boys, the voice change happens almost all at once; it seems like they go to bed one night with the voice of a boy and wake up the next morning with the voice of a man. Other guys may have months where their voice is higher at one moment and then lower a moment later. Sometimes a very quick change in pitch comes out as cracking. This might happen at very inconvenient moments: when you ask a question in class or when you are just about to get to the punch line of a joke. Fortunately, voice changes seldom take longer than 3-4 months to work themselves out.
