Town seemed absolutely deserted. No people, no cars. All the shops were shut. Like it had on that first day he’d gotten off the bus, but even more so. He’d come down to get some breakfast at the Doris cafe, Consider his next move. But this was a ghost town.
He went north from the main intersection. Felt the swirl of wind moving through his clothes. Strange scents on the air. The trees smelt different. The light was changing.
He stopped. Stared.
Someone had blocked up the road tunnel. A fallen tree, chopped with a chainsaw from above.
Thunder in the sky. Storm clouds rolling in. Something much more than a shiver running through him, through everything.
