Bibliographical Note

This Dover edition, first published in 2001, includes unabridged texts of Thomas Mann’s “Der Tod in Venedig” (first published in 1912; first trade publication in 1913, by S. Fischer, Berlin) and “Herr und Hund” (first published in 1919; first trade publication in 1919, by S. Fischer; see Introduction for further details on both works) from Standard German editions. The German texts are accompanied by New English translations of both works by Stanley Appelbaum, who also wrote the Introduction, prepared the English translation of Mann’s preface to the limited first edition of “Herr und Hund,” and provided explanatory footnotes in English. The translation of “Der Tod in Venedig” was first published by Dover Publications, in substantially the same form, in 1995 as a “Dover Thrift Edition.” All other material in English was prepared especially for this volume.
