Cowboy Fry Bread

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Total Time: 1 hour and 20 minutes

Makes 15 to 20 doughnut holes

Krispy Kreme doesn’t deliver out where we’re at, so one of the biggest treats for cowboys is when I make doughnuts. If it’s a good crew I sure don’t mind spoiling them. The reason I like this fry bread is because it isn’t too sweet and won’t overpower what you put on it. I like to top them with powdered sugar, honey, and/or cinnamon, or spread with icing. I will also flatten the dough into small circles and top with fruit pie filling. So get in the kitchen and get creative!

1. In a medium bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm water.

2. Mix in the milk, egg, sugar, and salt. Stir in the flour.

3. Cover with a tea towel and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until nearly doubled in size.

4. Pour 2 to 3 inches of vegetable oil into a medium saucepan. Warm the oil over medium-high heat until the temperature reaches about 325°F to 340°F.

5. Pinch off about 2-inch balls from the dough. Slightly flatten one piece in your hands and place in the oil. Repeat, frying 4 or 5 pieces at the same time. Fry for 1 to 2 minutes on each side, or until golden brown. Remove from the oil and let cool slightly on a paper towel. Repeat with the remaining dough. Serve warm or at room temperature.
