Chapter 9

Astrid stepped lightly when she went down to the dungeon. She nodded at the Order’s Knights who were stationed outside the dungeon. They were young men who were promised they were sacrificing their youth for the greater cause of the Known World.

Astrid dismissed them with a wave of her hand. Being the Huntress of the Order had its perks when she unlocked the dungeon prison by keying in the passcode into the keypad. It beeped, unlocking the door. Astrid stepped inside the darkened prison. She could hear that Aaron was breathing heavily. Her footsteps echoed through the silence. That was when Astrid heard him smirking in the dark.

“Well, well, well... If it isn’t the Huntress coming for a little visit. Come to get your sample of my blood after the brainwash that you had with your Master?” Aaron asked provocatively.

Astrid narrowed her eyes, looking at him. He was okay, susceptible to the hunger that was drawing inside his emerald eyes. Aaron was locked up here last night but Astrid could see his Darker Side was trying to come out.

The proof was in his obsidian eyes that were taunting inside his emerald orbs. Astrid was unsure if she could get close to him at this moment.

Aaron smirked. His fangs were sticking out a little. “Why are you standing there, gawking at me, Huntress? Don’t want to play with me anymore? Are you afraid of what I can do to you, Huntress?” he asked, provoking the competitive spirits in her. His green eyes were tracking every step that Astrid took inside the dungeon prison. Ultimately, Astrid had to be careful with him if she wanted to get out of there alive.

Astrid tilted her head. “If you know that I’ve come and get your blood, will you let me get close to you then, Covaci?” she asked, crossing her arms. Aaron chuckled softly before leaning against the wall.

“Why don’t you find out about it for yourself? I’m sure we can answer that question directly,” Aaron stated as Astrid was pacing back and forth in front of him. He smirked again, straightening up when Astrid was looking at his dire state.

In her honest opinion, even in his unkempt state, Aaron Covaci was one handsome, young man—a handsome, young Pure Blood.

He had a lean, muscular build. His sinew muscles were stretching against his tight shirt. His hair was disheveled. However, that style only brought out his handsomeness even more with it. His full, kissable lips were to die for. Those high cheekbones were the envy of any runaway models in Paris or Milan.

Moreover, Aaron’s emerald, green orbs were looking at Astrid as if she were his prey. It sent shivers down her bones. Aaron knew that he could catch Astrid if he was not being held by the chain. She gulped.

Then, his baritone voice broke the silence between them. “I must say, Huntress, I’m surprised that His Holiness let you come an inch near me. As far as I’m concerned, you’re his prize. Would he be worried that I would hurt you when you come to get my blood sample?” Aaron asked, arching his eyebrow in question. Astrid rolled her eyes as she was scoffing at him.

“Even if you are to hurt me, just know fully well that I will retaliate against you, Covaci. I’ll not let anything come between my missions to purify the world against your kind,” Astrid said confidently, looking at him. Not offended in the least, Aaron only smirked before he was licking his lips.

His pink, kissable lips, Astrid mused before she snapped her violet eyes to his eyes. She scowled and groaned inwardly when she noticed Aaron was doing it sensually. His tongue was wetting his dried lips and Astrid was hoping that she could taste his tongue.

Will our kiss be the same as the kisses that we shared in Sicily and the hallway of the facility before he was caught? Astrid mused before she caught herself. Woah, where did that thought come from?

She cleared her throat, brushing those dirty thoughts off her mind. Then, she took a step forward, before coming closer to him. There was only an inch between them. Aaron leaned forward as he was sniffing the air. He chuckled softly, closing his eyes. He smirked while showing his fangs that were fully retracted from his gums. Astrid stared at him.

“Alas, Huntress, I don’t think it would be wise for you to come near me now if you value your life,” he whispered huskily. Astrid scowled at him. She shook her head.

“I’m not afraid—”

Her sentence was cut off when Astrid watched Aaron’s green eyes turning obsidian. His whole white was consumed by the blackness. Now, Astrid knew that Aaron was being controlled by his Darker Side. She gulped, straightening her back as Astrid glared at him.

“I’m not afraid of you, Covaci,” she spoke, amazed with herself for her voice did not crack a little at the declaration. Aaron chuckled darkly.

“Of course, you’re not, dragul meu. You’re the Huntress of the Order. The killer of my kind. The assassin that we avoid. Nonetheless, I should warn you that my darker side will not take a no for an answer. You’re bleeding,” he said softly. A whisper in the dark. Instantly, Astrid blushed.

“How—how dare you, you oaf!” she exclaimed, hissing at him. She stepped closer, trying to prove her point of not being afraid of a Pure Blood. Aaron only smiled, showing his fangs without a single thought in the world.

“Careful now, dragul meu. I don’t want to be held responsible if you’ve been bitten here just because you don’t heed my warning. I’m considering taking what is rightfully mine when she’s dangling in front of me. Alone without any protection,” Aaron whispered huskily. He chuckled softly, sending shivers down Astrid’s spine.

She tsked at him, knowing fully well to take his heed and come for another day to get his blood sample. Astrid took a step back, stepping away from Aaron as his obsidian stare was tracking her every move. The chains chimed in the dark.

Astrid gulped as sweat dripped down her back. She was out of the dungeon prison when the keypad beeped again. Astrid looked at him when Aaron smiled.

“Wise choice, dragul meu,” he whispered against the dark.

Astrid rolled her eyes. “I’m not your dragul meu,” she retorted. Aaron just chuckled.

“Oh, but you’ll be. So, you might as well get used to being called that, dragul meu,” he replied. Astrid gritted her teeth.

“Listen here. I’m not your dragul meu, Covaci! I’m Hunt—”

Astrid,” he whispered her name against the dark. Astrid stopped her speech, hearing the pounding of her chest inside her ears. Her heart was beating fast when she heard her name whispered against his delectable, kissable mouth. His voice sounded her name like candy floss; it was sweet and right.

Astrid looked at him—staring murderously to be exact. Aaron took a deep breath, closing his eyes before turning his face away. He exhaled loudly as Astrid stared at him. Her heart soared at the sight and her knees turned to jelly.

She turned around, shaking her head as Astrid tried to collect herself. Then, she glared at him. A scowl was plastered to her lips. Astrid cleared her throat before pointing her finger at him.

“I’ll come back for your blood sample, Covaci, and that’s a promise,” she barked, narrowing her eyes. Aaron looked up to her face. Shivers ran in her blood when her violet stare clashed with his emerald orbs.

“I’m counting on it, Huntress, for the fun never stops until I say so,” he whispered. Astrid scoffed as the Order’s Knights took their places at the dungeon prison when the Huntress of the Order took her leave.
