A simple sweater knitted in a simple texture—a variation on garter stitch, where alternate stitches in alternate rows are worked in the stitch in the row below. The sweater is worked from the bottom up with hem, V-neck and cuffs in contrast-texture rib.

TENSION

7.5 sts and 17 rows to 10cm measured over shingle st using 10mm needles after steaming. Change needle size as necessary to ensure the correct tension.

Using 10mm needles cast on 20(22:24:26) sts and work in K1, P1 rib as foll:

Row 1 (RS): [K1, P1] to end of row.

Rep last row 8 times more, inc 1 st on last row. 21(23:25:27) sts.

Cont in shingle st as foll:

Row 1: K to end of row.

Row 2 (RS): K1, [K1B, K1] to end of row.

Row 3: K to end of row.

Row 4: K1B, [K1, K1B] to end of row.

Rep last 4 rows and AT THE SAME TIME, keeping the patt correct, inc 1 st at both ends of next row and every foll 16th row until 29(31:33:35) sts.

Keeping patt correct cont straight until sleeve meas 43(43:45:45)cm from the cast-on edge, ending with WS facing for next row.

Cast off loosely in patt.

FINISH

Join both shoulders using the three-needle cast-off method with WS of work tog so that the seam is on the outside of your work.

NECKBAND

With RS facing, using 9mm circular needle and starting at the left shoulder, pick up and K 22(22:22:24) sts down left front neck, pm, K centre st from safety pin and mark this st, pick up and K 22(22:22:24) sts up right front neck, 4 sts down right back neck, 9(9:9:11) sts from centre back holder and 4 sts up left back neck. 62(62:62:68) sts.

Pm for start of round and work in K1, P1 rib as foll:

Round 1 (dec): [K1, P1] to 2 sts before marked st, K2tog tbl, sm, K marked st, K2tog, [P1, K1] to last st of the round, P1.

Round 2 (dec): Rib as set to 2 sts before marked st, K2tog tbl, sm, K1, K2tog, rib as set to end of round.

Rep last round, decreasing as set, until rib meas 5cm.

Cast off in rib, working the shaping at the centre front during cast-off.

Weave in any ends on the WS of the work. Choose a flat padded surface or blocking board, pin work out to measurements with WS facing. Cover with a damp cloth and gently steam, avoiding ribbing. Leave to dry flat.

Sew in sleeves between markers.

Join sleeve and side seams.
