ACT 2 • SCENE 6
Mary Jane is alone in her room. We hear the beginning of “UNINVITED.” She takes pills.
MARY JANE: Like anyone would be / I am disturbed by my fascination with you1 / Like any flesh-and-blood human / I have simply found an object to crave / But you, you’re not allowed / You’re uninvited
An unfortunate slight
CHORUS:
Ohh...
Ohh...
1 “This song is about intimacy and lack of emotional safety. It’s about not trusting myself, not trusting someone else, not feeling safe. If intimacy is anything, it’s about creating safety—enough to be vulnerable and to speak transparently and to move through things together. It’s also just my ambivalence about surrendering, being infatuated. I just want to be all-in.”
MARY JANE/BELLA:
Must be strangely exciting
To watch the stoic squirm
Must be somewhat heartening
To watch the flawless fall from grace2
MARY JANE:
But you you’re not allowed
You’re uninvited
An unfortunate slight
CHORUS 1:
Ahh...
Ahh...
CHORUS:
Ahh...
Ahh...
CHORUS:
Ahh...
CHORUS 2:
Ahh ahh
Ahh ahh
2 “The original lyrics are, ‘To watch shepherd meet shepherd,’ a reference to City of Angels. I went to a screening of the movie. I never know if there’s going to be a song yielded from having watched a screening, but I went home and wrote this song in about fifteen minutes.”
