When Dominique finally came back, she sat down in the armchair across from me. She smiled as she glanced over at me.
“I’m terribly sorry about that,” she apologized. “I didn’t mean to keep you waiting. When I kill someone the way I killed that girl, it’s very draining. I had to lay down for a while.”
“Why did you kill her?” I questioned.
Dominique ran a hand through her short, copper tresses and then smiled at me. “She annoyed me. I don’t like it when anyone asks to see me.”
“And yet you didn’t kill me,” I pointed out, wondering if I should have kept my mouth shut. I didn’t want her to reconsider keeping me alive.
“You’re very attractive,” Dominique noted as she folded one leg over the other. “Besides that, I know who you are. You’re a Sherwood.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” I questioned.
“It means that you’d be useful to me.” She paused. “Of course, if your pack doesn’t win the game, I’ll have no choice but to kill you.”
“The game?” I asked with raised eyebrows.
A smile crossed her lips. “Your pack – and your mate and her family – are currently in Devil’s Falls searching for you.”
“Devil’s Falls?” A knot twisted in my stomach. I had heard enough about Devil’s Falls to know that nothing good ever came out of that town. Even without a soul, it scared me to know that my pack and Camryn were there looking for me.
“Yes. I created what you might consider somewhat of a scavenger hunt. It’s fairly simple. As long as your pack members find everything that I’ve planted for them to look for, then they get you back. And you get your soul back.”
“And if they don’t find everything?” I questioned.
Her smile spread a little further on her lips. “Then they will all die in Devil’s Falls. And you will die, too. Your body, that is. I will keep your soul as my own.”
I just stared at the woman who sat before me. Stephanie hadn’t been joking. Dominique really was what you would call your worst nightmare. “Why are you doing this?”
“For my own personal amusement,” she replied with a shrug. “I have cameras set up to watch them trying to find everything I’m looking for. You should have seen how frustrated they were earlier today.” Dominique smiled. Leaning forward, she said, “Want me to let you in on a little secret?”
“Sure,” I agreed with a shrug.
“No one ever wins the game.” She tossed her head back in laughter. “I love nothing more than to watch every pack fail before I have them all killed.”
“You’re a sick woman,” I murmured.
“And proud of it.” She smiled. “Maybe if you’re lucky, I’ll do something different this time. Maybe I’ll only have your loved ones killed and spare your life. What do you think of that?”
“I think that you’re a coldhearted wench,” I replied through gritted teeth.
“You know, I didn’t want to have to do this, but you’ve left me with no choice,” Dominique said, shooting an apologetic glance in my direction. And then she began to sing.
I remembered what Katie had told me earlier – that her song would make any guy fall in love with her – as she began to sing in the most beautiful voice I had ever heard.
The woman who sat in front of me began to transform right before my eyes. Her skin became more radiant and her eyes became more welcoming.
Although there had been no denying that she was attractive before, she was beautiful now. She was, by far, the most beautiful woman who I had ever laid eyes on.
A feeling of excitement coursed through me then. It didn’t take long for me to realize what the feeling meant.
I was hopelessly in love with Dominique.
