Forest Fire

Winter is kinder than fire.

Several days ago, the forests

were struck by lightning, and

the flames, fueled by drought,

raged with great violence.

In many places, the devastation

extended several miles’ distance.

The forest was in deep sable,

a spectacle more abhorrent than

white snow, for ice, though it

destroys the herbage, leaves

roots in safety, which fire does not.
