Large pine trees bear more copious branches on their southern side than toward the north.
Anthills, too, the south sides of which bear grass, the northern whortle berries. The bark of
aspen trees is rough on the north side, and smooth on the opposite. Old, withered pines are
clothed, on the north with the black usnea, or filamentous Lichen jubatus.
By such marks are you able to find your way through pathless forests.
