Living Lightly

The mountain Laplanders, or those who live

in the Alps, build no huts, only tents of sticks

and beams and walmal cloth. When they lie

down, they fix a hook through the coverlet

to let in the stars. Their furniture consists

of kettles and pots, made sometimes of brass,

sometimes of copper; rarely stone, on account

of the weight. They own nothing they cannot carry.
