APPENDIX I:

AERIAL VICTORY LIST OF RUDOLF BERTHOLD

[Author’s note: The following victory list was compiled from Rudolf Berthold’s own accounts, Hanns Möller’s JG 2 history, and official German daily, weekly and monthly reports, as well as comparable RFC/RNAS/RAF, French and US Air Service reports. The final assumptions are the author’s. In researching which units and airmen were involved in these aerial combats, several factors were considered: dates, times, places of the victory/loss, as well as proximity of the opposing air units’ airfields. Other more recent research provided additional corresponding casualty information to determine the most likely identities of Berthold’s victims. Dates are stated in the German style (day and month) and times are expressed in military time, with sub-headings to clarify whether a victory claim was an hour ahead of British/French time, or matched it. In two-seater claims, pilots are listed first, observers second. Condition of the aircrew is indicated by the abbreviations: WiA = Wounded in Action; DoW = Died of Wounds; KiA = Killed in Action; PoW = Prisoner of War. When no abbreviation is given, it is assumed the man was uninjured and returned to his own lines. Claims that were not confirmed are indicated by n/c.]
