THE ARMORY SHOW

pablo picasso

1912

The 1913 International Exhibition of Modern Art, better known by most as The Armory Show, was a momentous occasion. It was the first modern art exhibition of any scale in the US and introduced the genre to a flummoxed and delighted public who until then had seen nothing like it. Organising the show was American painter Walter Kuhn, a man who was unsure of which European artists to invite; realising his weakness, he instead turned to Pablo Picasso for advice. Picasso responded with this handwritten list of recommendations. For the sake of clarity, I have appended the artists’ full names.
