GEORGE WASHINGTON’S SLAVES

George Washington

April 1788

When he was 11 years old, future Founding Father and the first ever US President, George Washington, became the owner of ten slaves, whom he inherited from his father. When Washington died 56 years later, over 300 lived at his home, Mount Vernon. The list seen here was written in 1788 and details those “blacks [that he owned] above 12 years of age”.
