BELIEF & TECHNIQUE FOR MODERN PROSE

Jack Kerouac

1958

In 1958, a year after the publication of his magnum opus – the sprawling, rambling On the Road – American beat poet and novelist Jack Kerouac sent a letter to friend and publisher Donald Allen that included this, a “list of essentials” for writers of modern prose, written in his own inimitable style. The next year, with Kerouac’s blessing, it was printed in Evergreen Review, the literary magazine then edited by Allen.
