PART II

ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY OF SWALLOWING

An understanding of the anatomy and physiology of swallowing is critical for the accurate diagnosis and treatment of patients with swallowing disorders. Although different specialists involved with the management of dysphagic patients have different perspectives based on their experience and patient populations, knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of swallowing should be common to every specialist. With the formation of multidisciplinary teams, contributions to the understanding of the anatomy and physiology of swallowing made by different health care disciplines have been integrated into a common fund of knowledge that serves as the foundation of clinical pathways.
