Chapter 9

Constructing Coherent Sentences

You may think, how hard is it to construct a sentence? Many people assume since they know the individual aspects of a sentence all they have to do is put them together and—violà!—they have a perfect sentence. In reality there are several things that can go wrong with sentence construction even if you are versed in the individual elements that make up the sentence. Sentences need to be logical and balanced, they need to be linked by connectors, and they need to avoid things like misplaced modifiers and fragments. This chapter gives you some pointers for looking critically at your sentence construction so that your writing remains solid and clear.
