64. In the case of Iraq, Saddam Hussein produced large quantities of chemical weapons when he was fighting an eight-year war against Iran in the 1980s with Western and Arab support. When these powers turned against him after his invasion of Kuwait in 1990, Saddam was ordered to destroy his chemical weapons arsenal per a UN Security Council resolution. The United States continued to accuse Saddam of hiding some of these weapons, and in the lead up to the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003, the George W. Bush administration claimed it had intelligence that supposedly proved Saddam was working to weaponize his chemical stockpiles and also reconstitute Iraq’s nuclear program. US ally Britain went further by claiming Iraq could deploy chemical and biological weapons within 45 minutes after the issuing of an order by Saddam to do so. After the invasion, all these claims proved to be false.

Ayoub, who was deeply involved in early peaceful protests, worked hard, especially in the Damascus suburbs, to transcend religious divides, keep the movement secular and nonviolent, and dispel the perception enforced by the regime that all Christians supported Bashar al-Assad. Ayoub was detained by the regime for one month in early 2012 and was personally interrogated and insulted by the notorious Jamil Hassan, chief of the mukhabarat’s Air Force Intelligence Directorate. He kept telling Ayoub that he was shocked that a Christian like her was siding with the “terrorist” Sunni Muslims, and that Christians, Alawites, and other minorities shared one destiny.
