On November 16, 1959, the day after the murders, The Kansas City Star reported that Finney County Sheriff Earl Robinson doubted that robbery was a motive, as did Logan Sanford, director of the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.[180] In fairness, law enforcement had few clues so early in the investigation, apart from the discovery that “A diamond ring and church pledge envelope, containing several dollars, lay on a bureau in the girl’s bedroom.”[181]
