This is the story of a registered nurse who worked the late shift. It was shared by her husband Dan.
The nurse, who typically worked in the cardiac ward, was helping out and volunteered in the Alzheimer’s unit. When doing her rounds, she normally saved a specific patient for last. All the nurses disliked the elderly woman because she was miserably mean to everyone.
One night, the nurse finally finished catering to all of her other patients and was on her way to the elderly woman’s room. The respiratory therapist arrived at her door the same time as the nurse. The two of them decided to do their tasks together. When the two of them entered the room, the patient was hysterical. The woman was screaming and jumping on the bed. Worst of all, the walls of the bathroom were smeared with defecation. The two medical personnel first dealt with the old lady and eventually calmed her down. After that was taken care of, the two were able to return to their scheduled duties—which by that point included cleaning up the bathroom.
After about three hours, they left the room and placed a “Do Not Disturb” sign on the door so the elderly patient could sleep. They were still at the patient’s door, standing on opposite sides and complaining about what just happened when they noticed a huge man walking down the hallway of the hospital. He was wearing a red, plaid shirt, overalls, working boots, and a John Deere baseball cap. His overall appearance reminded them of a farmer. The man, obviously annoyed, walked past the two and straight into the room. He even slammed the door after him!
Shocked, the nurse immediately went inside with the therapist right behind her. They were stunned to see that the man wasn’t in there. They looked everywhere. They checked under the bed. Nothing. The nurse went inside the bathroom. It was empty. They checked the curtains. Still no sign of the strange man. The windows were shut. It was impossible for the man to have jumped out the window and close it in time for the two not to see him.
That was when they noticed the elderly woman was awake and sitting up in bed. She was staring into space. The nurse asked the old woman if she had seen a person come inside her room. To their astonishment, the patient said, “Yes.”
“It was my daddy,” the elderly woman continued. “He came to take me home tonight so that you mean people won’t be able to hurt me anymore.”
“That’s great,” the nurse responded. “Now how about you get some rest before he comes to pick you up.” The old woman obliged and went back to bed without fighting them.
The elderly patient passed away that very night.
