Some Extra Treats from Sioux Dallas

Spiced Tea

You won’t find this recipe anywhere else unless someone got it from me. It came down through my mother’s family and was used as medicine by her mother who was a midwife. It was also a beverage that the majority of the people liked and enjoyed it whenever they pleased. It can be sipped any time you please or used for stomach cramps, indigestion, or insomnia.

First make a strong unsweetened tea base. I use ten or twelve Lipton tea bags and enough boiling hot water to have a strong, strong pint when it finished steeping.

To this add a large can of unsweetened grapefruit juice, a large can of unsweetened pineapple juice, and a large can of unsweetened orange juice.

Stir in one full teaspoon of each of the following: powdered cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves and all spice. The more variety of spices, the better. Stir well together. Add juice from two fresh lemons.

Let simmer until it starts to bubble. Makes one and one half gallons. I store it in the refrigerator and take out a mug as I want it. It will last a surprisingly long time on refrigeration.

It can be drunk as is or sweeten to taste. I do use Splenda most of the time.

Old Fashioned No Bake Fudge-Oatmeal Cookies

2 cups white sugar

1 cup sweet milk

½ cup butter or margarine

6 full tablespoons cocoa

6 cups dry oatmeal

1 cup peanut butter (I use crunchy)

Cook over low heat stirring often until the mixture is smooth. Remove from heat and stir in 2 teaspoons of vanilla.

Drop on wax paper -- amount determines size of each piece preferred. Allow to cool and enjoy.

Molasses Taffy

2 cups molasses

1 cup white sugar

¾ cup water

1/8 teaspoon baking soda

4 tablespoon butter or margarine

½ teaspoon vanilla.

Cook the molasses, sugar and water slowly to a hard-ball stage, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and mix in all of the other ingredients. Pour into a greased pan until almost cool. Coat both your hands with butter or margarine. (Takes 2 people) Pull the mixture between the partners and fold it over. Stretch into a long rope and cut into small pieces. Yummy. Enjoy!
