Just like the city itself, Los Angeles’s golf courses are diverse. They range wildly in difficulty and lawn manicure, as well as in views (sweeping ocean vistas in Palos Verdes, power plants and overhead airplanes in El Segundo). Many courses are more expensive on Fridays than other weekdays, so if you’re teeing off at the end of the workweek it won’t hurt to check. Also, some courses offer discounts for residents— but if you are one you probably already know that. This warm-weather city offers golf daily all year-round, especially considering the novices who forget their manners about playing through. On weekends, the best tee times are at the crack of dawn to avoid waiting. The city operates a total of 13 courses, including seven 18-hole championship courses, five 9-hole courses, and one 18-hole pony course. Call ahead for conditions, particularly after heavy rainfall. The County operates 16 courses as well (three 9-hole, 13 regulation 18-hole). In summer, bear in mind the weather, as temperatures can easily pass 100 degrees in the Valley. In addition, individual cities and hotels have 3-par courses available to the public. Some public courses will require a city permit; check with the club when booking a tee time. We like the one at the Marriott Hotel in Manhattan Beach (Map 27). There’s no real dress code (sneakers are permitted), but some people like to hide their handicap behind a smart pair of pants and polo shirt.
