Overview
Burbank (BUR)—also known as the Bob Hope Airport (if you build it, LA will name it after an old celebrity)—is a small, low-key alternative to LAX, and a must if you live east of La Brea, or in the San Gabriel or San Fernando Valley. The parking is cheaper (especially in the nearby discount lots), the lines are shorter, and travelers coming through here are simply happier. From groups of partiers hopping a quick Southwest jaunt to Vegas to the smiling folks boarding JetBlue for NYC’s JFK, Burbank is as stress-free as flying gets. Sure, the addition of JetBlue and Delta cross-country service has busied up the place and put some stress on the parking situation, but that’s just a bit of turbulence during an otherwise smooth trip.
How to Get There—Driving
The airport is just off the 5, so if you’re approaching from the north or south, take the 5 and exit at Hollywood Way. Take Hollywood Way south and find the airport entrance on your right.
If you’re coming from the west, take the 101 S to the 134 E and use the Hollywood Way exit. Travel north on Hollywood Way until you hit the airport on your left.
From the East, you can make your way to either the 134 W or I-5N and follow the above directions.
From most parts of the Valley, it’s preferable to take surface streets to Burbank Airport. Burbank or Victory Boulevards provide a fairly direct route to the airport from the western end of the Valley. From all other directions, it’s best to choose your favorite non-freeway route to Hollywood Way and take that straight into the airport.
How to Get There—Mass Transit
Similar to the rail systems in Europe and Japan, Metrolink and Amtrak trains both go right to the airport—well, almost. The terminals are just a short walk or free shuttle bus away.
The Burbank Airport station is on the Ventura County (yellow) Metrolink Line and, depending on where you’re coming from, during peak hours it will cost between $4.75 to $5.00 one-way (same zone) and $11.75-$12.00 (if you’re starting from the very end of the Orange County Line). Off-peak you can expect to pay between $3.50 and $8.75. Trains link up Monday–Friday only. 800-371-LINK; www.metrolinktrains.com.
Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner Train (which runs from San Diego to Paso Robles) makes a stop at the Burbank Airport Rail Station as does their Motor Coach Service to the San Joaquin trains in Bakersfield. 800-USA-RAIL; www.amtrak.com.
MTA buses are slower but cheaper. Numbers 94, 163, 165, and 394 all make stops at Burbank Airport. 800-COMMUTE; www.mta.net.
Parking
Short-term parking is located in the four-story garage across the entry road from the terminal. It can be pricey if you stick around for more than an hour or two: $5 for the
first hour, $13 for the second, and up to a $31 daily maximum. There’s economy parking in lots A, B, C, and E and rates range from $3 for the first hour to $10-$23 for 24 hours, depending on the lot. A number of companies also offer covered long-term parking in locations adjacent to the airport. Got more money than time? Valet parking is $23 per day and located a scant 30 yards from the terminal.
